Edan Umrigar

wait: how many ways are there to try
and show you this could be one: i liked
to hold my breath between cars passing
on the right-hand side of

ours back from 2003 this is some
thing i still do (you’ll have to take my word
for) it can’t be the only way of doing this time
maybe: we went on a walk back in 2005 i was

worried that the bramble would scratch
my eyes when we passed through it was
getting darker and the ploughed mud
made for uneven ripples that’re not so

good for standing on the way back we
had dinner at that place on the crossroads
i have walked past many times since
december 2010 (orange shirt) blink twice

and you miss it like the amber pulse of
the car in front of us’ indicator light
would never line up with the click ours
made inside despite how much i would

try and count them into the same i was
only ever really following like waiting for the
dvd sign to hit the corner and bounce back
in green this time could be the one: these

are the things in life worth living for i can
only hope you know what i mean and if
you do then maybe i don’t even need to
say it but thank you for sharing your water

melon with me: you also ate the seeds we spoke
about the colour of them amongst what felt
like ourselves are they black because the
watermelon’s older or do some just have white

seeds like this one – look – maybe it’s some
interference from the orange one – honeydew – yeah
honeydew or cantaloupe but then maybe not – look –
this seed’s right in there for the taking our time is

right out of nowhere do you eat them as well
yeah i thought so only way to do it really and
there’s nothing wrong with the seeds did you
ever think that a tree might grow in your stomach

if you swallowed them i was never convinced but
i swallowed gum once in september 2009:
it didn’t taste nearly as good for one and
i didn’t have a choice as i do now – for another.
